The portuguese cobblestones or mosaics (also known as portuguese stone in Brazil) is an established name for a particular type of floor covering used especially for sidewalks and pedestrian areas as well as public spaces in general.
This type of sidewalks are widely used in Lusophone countries. The cobblestones consist in laying irregularly shaped stones, usually limestone and basalt, which can be used to form decorative patterns by using the contrast between the different colors.
The most traditional colors are black and white, although the brown and red is also very popular.
