Lioz
Lioz

The Lioz limestone is a rare type of hard limestone that originates in the Lisbon region and its surroundings (north and northwest), particularly in the municipality of Sintra, having the main quarries outside the Pero Pinheiro village.

The quarries  were formed in the Cenomanian - Cretaceous period in a shallow sea environment, warm and clear waters, leading to the proliferation of carbonated skeleton of organisms and coral banks. The rock is characterized by being a bioclastic limestone and compact calciclastic, rich in biosparite and microsparite usually beige, although there are varieties with coloration ranging from light gray to pink and off-white.

It was widely used in the country as an ornamental rock and for the construction of structural elements such as lintels, cills and window frames.
